Optimise Project Management in the Raw Materials Sector


1. Introduction


Managing a high CAPEX project takes more than technical oversight. It requires effective governance, stakeholder alignment and compliance with increasingly strict regulations. In this programme, you will learn how to structure project governance, prevent cost and schedule overruns, and address regulatory and ESG risks—from investment approval through to handover to operations.



  • Dates: 27 January to 11 February 2027, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 15:00 to 18:00 (Madrid time)

  • Format: Blended, with live online sessions and independent work

  • Duration: 24 hours

  • Group size: 8 to 12 participants

2. Programme structure


Six live sessions (18 hours) and two independent work sessions (6 hours).


Schedule: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 15:00–18:00.


3. Skills you will develop


What you will be able to do



  • Design project governance, including roles and approval levels.

  • Coordinate technical and regulatory stakeholders to keep the project moving.

  • Integrate licences, permits and ESG criteria into project delivery.

  • Control costs and schedules using realistic baselines, contingencies and earned value.

  • Manage risks and changes, and provide management with clear information for decision-making.


4. Who the course is for


This course is designed for professionals responsible for high-investment projects in mining, energy, infrastructure and raw materials:



  • Project and programme directors, and high CAPEX project managers

  • Engineering directors and lead engineers

  • Operations, plant and production managers

  • Technical leads and project controls professionals


5. How you will learn



  • Learn. Live sessions combine international frameworks with real examples from high CAPEX projects.

  • Practise. Group workshops and simulations let you make compliance and project control decisions in realistic scenarios.

  • Apply. Develop a raw materials project case study and present it in the final session. Your work will include a stakeholder register, Project Charter, work breakdown structure (WBS) and risk register.


On completion, you will receive the Leapman Academy Executive Certificate of Achievement. To qualify, you must attend at least 80% of the course and achieve a final score of 70/100 or higher.


6. Instructors



  • Pedro Balsa is Managing Director of Leapman. A mining engineer with an MBA and PMP® certification, he has more than 20 years of experience leading high-investment projects in 21 countries. He was named among the world’s 50 most influential people in project management in 2022.

  • Carlos J. Pampliega is Vice President of the PMI Madrid Spain Chapter. A PMP® professional, he has led more than 100 projects with PMideas and is Academic Director of the Project Management Programme at CEU San Pablo Business School.
